Reading Rowing club's most promising young rowers have won one of the winter season's most prestigious races.
The four girls, who are part of rowing's World Class Start programme which aims to identify future Olympians, were the fastest women's junior coxed four at the School's Head of the River Race. Amy Millar, Heidi Christie, Nicki Godbold and Olivia Carnegie-Brown raced over the London course with Nick Brown steering, and scored a victory in a tougher event than usual. Managing to beat last year's winners, Henley Rowing Club, the result means they are among Britain's most promising young oarswomen. They now begin training for the summer season hoping they can maintain their winning ways at the National Schools Regatta in Nottingham at the end of May.
March is a big month in the rowing calendar, and more than fifty Reading rowers raced down the famous course on the Thames between Barnes Bridge and Putney. The senior women raced three eights down the four-and-a-quarter mile course from Chiswick to Putney. Reading's top crew showed that the gruelling training regime and early morning sessions had paid off. They finished 20th in a time trial race of more than 200 boats, doing well to complete the course in just over 20 minutes. The women's novice team, who only took up the sport last year, posted a very promising result, beating one of the senior Reading crews and coming second overall in their category.
The men's senior squad were last to race a fortnight before the famous University Boat Race. The top senior men's crew finished 106 out of 410 crews from across Britain and Europe, with three other crews all posting solid results in their categories.
The rowers at Caversham are now looking ahead to the summer regatta season, which features shorter, head to head races instead of long distance time trials. All the crews will be aiming to qualify for Henley Royal Regatta and notch up some strong results at the National Championships in Nottingham in July.

Henley Royal Regatta is over for another year. Unfortunate draws hampered the progress of all Reading crews, however some real achievements were gained. The Thames Cup eight won their first round convincingly against Tees RC and the Wyfold 4 joined them in the second round by beating London RC 'C' however both crews came up against stiff opposition on day 2 with the 8 facing Crefelder RC, Germany and the 4- facing seeds Grosvenor RC. The Britannia 4 missed out on a seeded place and instead drew seeded crew (and eventual winners of the event) York City. After winning their first round, Barry Gardener and Richard Ellera came up against the Polish double - a seeded crew and losing finalists whilst Athalie in the composite women's quad enjoyed a row-over before meeting the Australian quad in the Semi-Final.

A very successful weekends rowing saw wins at Henley Women's Regatta and Marlow Regatta. Many congratulations to Athalie Redwood-Brown who won the Senior Double Sculls at Henley Women's Regatta setting a new course record. The lightweight coxless four also deserve huge congratulations. They made the final, however were unfortunately pipped to the post by Mortlake Anglian and Alpha. The women's 1st eight also won their first round, progressing to the Semi Final.
The Men's Squad also had some excellent results at Marlow Regatta with the coxed four winning S2 (Sun) and placing 2nd at S1 (both days). The coxless four also won their S2 event on the Sunday and there were wins in S3 for the 8. Finally Barry Gardner and Richard Ellera won the elite double sculls (Sat). These excellent results from the Men's squad have ensured pre-qualification for all Reading's Mens Squad crews at Henley Royal Regatta. Well Done!
Reading will be attending qualifying races at Henley Royal Regatta in the Remenham Challenge Cup (Women's 8's) and the Pricess Grace Challenge Cup (Women's 4x's). We will also be represented in the Thames Challenge Cup (Club 8's), Britannia Challenge Cup (Club 4+'s), Wyfold Challenge Cup (4-'s) and the Double Sculls (Open 2x)
