Vesta Scullers Head – 28th November 2009

Conditions weren’t bad for this year’s Scullers Head with sunshine for most of the race and the wind not affecting the rowers until after Hammersmith. Once past Hammersmith though, a strong headwind made the row very tough.

Reading had five members representing the club. Simon Gough was the fastest RRC sculler coming 97th overall.  Kevin Du Toit achieved 141st.  Dirk Borgstede came 23rd in his category.  Chris Heemskerk came 6th out of 21 competitors in W IM3 and 26th woman overall.  Sally Pollok-Morris competed in WVetB where she came 2nd.

RRC brave the gusty winds at Kingston Head

Reading Squads entered Kingston Head with a full trailer load on Saturday 21st November. With the weather forecast to be torrential, rowers expected the worst, however despite fast river conditions and some strong gusty winds in the afternoon division, everyone stayed dry and many achieved some great times.

RRC achieved a total of 5 wins on the day, the men won IM2 4 and the IM2 - and the women won WIM1 4-, IM2 4x and WIM3 2x.

Weybridge Silver Sculls – 24th October 2009

Again, RRC have brought back several pots this weekend from Weybridge Silver Sculls. A 3.3km upstream course which in the morning was rather wet, but with the sun coming out turned windy in the afternoon. Four pots were won between 3 scullers with Caroline Mills winning the Women’s Vet Novice event as well as the Women’s Novice. Sally Pollok-Morris won a lidded pot for being the fastest double of the event with her partner from Wycliffe College. Chris Heemskerk was second fastest woman of the event and won a pot in the Women’s IM3 singles.

Pairs Head – 17th October 2009

6 Reading crews and 2 composites packed their wellies and went to compete with 366 other crews in Pairs Head this year. The conditions were nice for the first half, but after Barnes Bridge the wind suddenly picked up and the water turned choppy.
Julia Francis and Hannah Bloxham finished 2nd in their WIM1 2-, Caroline Mills and Sophie White came 3rd in the WIM3 2x out of 33 crews. Event Pennants were won by Sue Radley and Sally Pollok-Morris in the WElite 2- and Dirk Borgstede and Chris Heemskerk in the Mx IM3 2x.

Isis Sculls 2009 – 26 September 2009

Four of RRC's scullers kicked off the new head season in style each picking up a win on the Isis in Oxford this September.  The Isis Sculls is organised by City of Oxford rowing club and is held over four divisions with each race (upstream) lasting only 1850m.

The shorter head race distance and glorious weather were a gentle introduction to the season, which traditionally offers races over much longer distances and more autumnal conditions.

Reading left their mark on the event with some solid wins in Vet F, WIM2, WNov, WVet B and WNov. Photos of races at BigBlade Photography.

RRC's results:

  • Frank Wolton Vet F 1x  1st place  8.07.47 (77.31% National Open Record Time)
