The Novice Women's Squad is a friendly group of varying ages. Two very knowledgeable and experienced coaches, Kirsty Jones and Jim Flood, share the responsibility of coaching the squad. They can be seen at times rowing with a crew, coxing or cycling up and down the towpath giving supportive guidance.

What do you want to achieve?

It might be that you are taking up rowing to improve your fitness, to make new friends or to learn a new sport. As you improve, you might wish to become part of a race crew that competes regularly at regattas, you might wish to compete occasionally or you might want to row recreationally without the pressure of competition. As you develop, we will be aiming to support you and to facilitate the grouping of like-minded people.

Training Sessions

We currently row on Sundays at 4pm, Thursdays at 7pm and Saturdays at 9am. Sometimes the crews arrange additional early morning sessions. It is not necessary to attend all sessions but the more you row, the quicker you will make progress.

We use an online booking system so that members put their names down for the sessions they will be attending. This enables us to organise the crews in advance of each session.

We aim to

  • To develop competent rowers who can take responsibility for their own safety, the safety of others and the safe handling of the boats and equipment used.
  • To develop good rowing and boat handling techniques that protect the body from undue strain.
  • To make the experience of developing as a rower both challenging and fun.
  • To continueproviding a welcoming, encouraging and supportive environment for new members of the squad.
  • To support members in achieving their own goals within the sport.
  • To provide a structure of rowing and that will enable individuals and groups to progress to rowing independently (and at times to suit them) within the Club Rules.
  • To establish an environment in which dissatisfactions can be discussed in an open and positive manner.
  • To review these aims and the means by which they are being achieved.
