The Amateur Rowing Association (ARA), now known as British Rowing, have published guidance and directions, based on the Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) Standards For Safeguarding and Protecting Young People in Sport (2003), identifying what rowing clubs need to do in relation to child protection. This information can be accessed by navigating through the sections found under the welfare heading on the British Rowing website at http://www.britishrowing.org/welfare. A special page for junior rowers can be found at http://www.britishrowing.org/juniors/stay-safe
RRC has a Club Welfare Officer (CWO), Nikki Hewish, who ensures that RRC is compliant with British Rowing's guidance on child protection. Nikki administers the process to ensure that all adult volunteers and coaches are supported and that regular CRB procedures are followed. She acts for all club members in a neutral capacity and is available to any junior rowers, parents or other members of RRC who have questions or would like to discuss any welfare matters at any time. You can contact the welfare officer at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
There are British Rowing guidelines regarding training levels for junior athletes, entitled "How much and how often", accessible by clicking here.
RRC’s Junior Vice-Captain shapes the junior training programme around this guidance. In the clubhouse, on the Junior Squad notice board, junior rowers and their parents can find posters with the contact details of RRC’s CWO Officer and other useful sources of information.
